Reddit could soon join Twitter in allowing NFT profile pics – tests are already underway

Reddit is tipped to likely join the NFT bandwagon after it emerged that it was testing out the likelihood of allowing NFT profile pics. The news comes barely a week after Twitter launched NFT profile pics allowing users to use NFTs as their profile pictures.

On average, about 430 million people used Reddit every month in 2021 making it one of the most popular social media platforms around the world. The introduction of NFT profile pictures is likely to set the platform ablaze as most artists are now opting for NFTs.

Reddit testing the use of NFT profile pictures came to light during Techcrunch’s interview with Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt. During the interview, the spokesperson said:

“We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership…It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

Earlier in the week, an app developer had posted a banner on Twitter that appeared to be from Reddit promoting the NFT profile pics feature.

Reddit and NFTs

Reddit has been experimenting with NFTs for some time now and it is looking at a number of initiatives.

It has set up a dedicated page at nft.reddit.com that is dedicated to NFT-related activities.

In May 2020, Reddit introduced two cryptocurrency tokens (BRICKs and MOONs) for its /r/Fortnite and /r/cryptocurrency communities respectively. The two cryptocurrencies are based on Ethereum standards.
